The biotechnology market is enjoying very strong growth. Indeed, biodrugs offer much more significant treatment perspectives than small molecules. They remain very expensive to make, however, and the price per dose remains very high. One of the key last steps is the lyophilization process which aims to stabilize the product by changing it from a liquid form to a solid form. Any losses due to quality problems at this stage are the most critical because the product has reached its maximum amount; similarly, after this stage, it is either commercialized or sent for clinical testing. Any unnoticed quality problems could thus have serious consequences.

GEA has decided to launch a new solution, Lyosense, enabling thorough checking of production as it exits from the freeze-dryer. The measurement concept is based on Indatech‘s patented technology which uses multipoint NIR measurement to analyze pharmaceutical products directly through glass vials. This offers many advantages, from the clinical phase to production, in financial, qualitative and safety terms.
